Peter BakerBakers Blog ... October 2007

Welcome to our Autumn term here at Highfields! I’d like to specially introduce two new friends who will be joining our staff as ministry apprentices for 2007/2008. Heather Lewis and Alys Cottom – a warm welcome to you both!

I’ve already met students and Internationals from Sweden, Germany, South Africa and Cameroon. Be sure to be especially attentive to these young friends as there’ll be lots of anxious parents wanting the local Church to help their grown children settle in.

David HaimeMoving to news from our established friends, David Haime and Peter Holt have retired from their respective roles as Elders. Peter HoltThis stepping down does not mean a stepping out of ministry and we can look forward to their ongoing service in the areas of church life where we have come to love and respect them. We do however want to take this opportunity to thank them both for all their input over the years having served in this leadership position for us.

Tom BelcherTom Belcher too, has also moved on after two years on staff and will be starting college imminently – we trust the Lord will continue to direct and lead you in this new chapter. You’ll be glad to know it’s not all goodbyes, we are looking to appoint Viv Jenkins to take his place – look out for a letter about this coming your way.

As we are keen to prioritise a life transformed by the word of God, we’ve introduced another small group option called 'Lifegroups' which will be meeting weekly. Please see Phil Jenkins for more details!

We’ll also be offering an interesting new opportunity to learn and grow together on Sunday nights in October called…

facethebook

If you are unaware of the cultural allusion within the title, don’t worry, ask your children or grandchildren!!

The Issues we will be covering over the four week period will be:

  1. Creation and our response to the challenge of environmental stewardship
  2. The Bible and the nature of revelation and truth
  3. Suffering and the goodness of God
  4. The uniqueness of Christ and the challenge of pluralism.

In addition to our core commitment to teach the Bible rigorously, during these evenings we will include time for refreshments and break out groups. Songs and hymns will flow into a message designed to raise questions and stimulate discussion.

There will be a variety of different groups for you to join. Just find one that suits you from among the following:

  • Q&A: You might want to be part of the crowd that stays in the Chapel to “roast the preacher and grill the panel.”

  • Taking it Further: You might want to join others in the Pierce Hall for round-the-table group discussions following on from what you’ve heard.

  • Just Looking: You might want to attend a group for those who are not sure what they believe about faith, Jesus and the Bible.

  • Welcome foyer: If you are fairly new to Highfields and just want to meet others then there’s a chance to do that at the bottom of the stairs in the reception area.

Hopefully there’ll be something for everyone and you can try a different group the next time if you want. We look forward to you being part of it and bringing others too!

(In case there are any anxious students, let me assure you there will be pizza for all of you in the Pierce Hall as usual following after the break out groups!)

Ever blessing in the new term
As always, in Christ,

Peter Baker
